Taiwanese helmer Singing Chen's second feature "God Man Dog" is a professional leap forward from her 2001 freshman outing "Bundled." But despite the use of some experienced thesps, including Tarcy Su and Hou Hsiao Hsien vet Jack Kao, there's a void at the center of the drama's script, which tries to unite three disparate stories of unhappy folk. Limited fest outings beckon.
In the dumps from her baby's cot death, pianist Ching-ching (Su) goes on vacation to Taiwan's scenic east coast with husband Hsiung (Chang Han) in hopes of repairing their marriage. Meanwhile, alcoholic Aboriginal Biung (Ulao Ugan), a native of the region, is trying to quit the sauce with help from God, spouse Mei (Mo Ka-yi) and tomboy daughter Savi (Tu Hsiao-han). Also driving around is a Christian minister, Yellow Bull (Kao), who's trying to help a young wastrel, Hsien (Jonathan Chang). Characters eventually cross paths after an auto accident in the mountains caused by a stray dog.
Production values are smooth, but Hiromichi Sakamoto's whacky score can't disguise the fact there's nothing really going on in the script except self-pity and navel-gazing.
